Training That Make Sense To Your Dog!

Our training philosophy is the foundation for all of our obedience training and behavior modification programs. We have found that by communicating to our dogs in a way that is easily and naturally understood, our dogs are happy to follow our lead and act on our desires rather than react according to their fears, anxiety, boredom, or curiosity.

In the wild, a dog's very survival depends on a strong, stable and organized pack, where every member knows its place and follows the rules established by the pack leader. When we bring a dog into our home and offer it food, toys, and affection without first establishing a clear relationship in a way that makes sense to the dog, we create an unstable situation and a confused and stressed dog.

The purpose of obedience training is not to teach a dog tricks; the ability to sit (or to follow any other obedience command) is only a tool. The goals of our program are to teach the dog to relax, to defer to you, to enjoy earning a salary for an appropriate, desirable behavior, and to develop a relationship with his human family in a way that fulfills his natural desire to become a responsible, working member of his pack. This then becomes the foundation for teaching the dog context-specific appropriate behavior. The focus is to teach the dog to rely on you for all the cues as to the appropriateness of his behavior so that he can then learn not to react inappropriately.

At Las Vegas Canine Academy, our training program usually includes food treats, at least at the very beginning, to show the dog a very clear and immediate reward for deferring to your wishes. Remember, the treats are used as a salary or reward, not as a bribe. If you bribe a dog into being obedient, there is no foundation for respect and leadership, and if you bribe a problem dog, you are defeated before you start.

Once the relationship between you and your dog has been established and the dog has learned the appropriate behavior, the food treats are no longer neccesary. At that point it is natural for the dog to want to please the leader and do do what he now realizes is his job in your pack.
